Sports, Entertainment and Media

Members of Chambers have a substantial presence in both sports and entertainment work.

Activities in the sports field range from appearances in the Sports Disputes resolution Council to heavy commercial litigation in the field of sports. Chambers’ charities expertise is relevant to the governance of sports clubs and authorities, while members of chambers also act as arbitrators, chairmen of disciplinary and appeal panels and mediators. The arbitrations, disciplinary cases and mediations are obviously confidential; some examples of sports related litigation are as follows: Proform Sports Management Ltd v Proactive Sports Management Ltd (2006) 156 N.L.J. 1723; Stretford v Football Association Ltd [2006] EWHC 479; Bath and North East Somerset DC v. A-G [2002] EWHC 1623.

In the field of entertainment, work over recent years covers copyright, performers rights and contractual disputes and includes acting for Harrisongs Limited in claims against Sony/ATV for song-writing royalties on compositions by George Harrison; advising several record companies in relation to leading artists; a number of audit claims; a claim to joint copyright in songs subsequently licensed to Madonna; litigation in respect of the exploitation of recordings by Jimi Hendrix (Experience Hendrix) LLC v PPX Enterprises Inc [2003] E.M.L.R. 25; successfully defending Universal-Island Records and the Marley family against a claim by the former bassist of the Wailers; Barrett v Universal-Island Records Ltd [2006] E.M.L.R. 21; and several mediations.
