James Behrens is the chancellor for the dioceses of Leicester and Bristol, and the deputy chancellor for the diocese of Bath and Wells. His publications on ecclesiastical law include Practical Church Management (1998 and 2005); Church Disputes Mediation (2003); Confirmation, Sacrament of Grace (1986) (all published by Gracewing); and Atkin’s Court Forms volume 18(1) (LexisNexis, 2004).
Recent work includes Coekin v Bishop of Southwark (2006) (appeal to the Archbishop of Canterbury against the bishop’s revocation of a minister’s licence), advising at the Primates meeting in Newry, Northern Ireland, and at the meeting of the Anglican Consultative Council in Nottingham (2005), advising on church trusts, church appointments, pastoral schemes and faculty cases, giving expert evidence in a child abuse case involving the Roman Catholic Church (2004), acting as mediator in an employment dispute involving a Baptist Church, acting as mediator in a disciplinary case involving a cathedral, and acting as mediator in a case of pastoral breakdown in a parish. Current clients include Anglican Mainstream and the Intercontinental Church Society.
