Antonio Gramsci Shipping (& ors) v Romanica (& ors)

[2010] EWHC 1134 (Comm)

Court: High Court
Philip Jones QC, Hugh Norbury QC

The Defendants are alleged to have defrauded the claimants of between US $50 and 100 million through interposing charters with themselves between real charters and their charter customers.

Philip Jones QC, assisted by Hugh Norbury, acted for the Claimants in a commerical fraud worth up to US$1.25m relating to undervalued charters in the Latvian shipping industry. It is the largest commercial dispute that Latvia has known. Obtained a freezing injunction and an order that the defence is "shadowy" on our summary judgment application so the defendants have been ordered to pay $40m (or $20m plus shares worth more than $20m) into court.
