EU ongoing antitrust cases in energy sector

Professor Suzanne Rab has been quoted on EU antitrust cases in the energy sector in an article by The Capitol Forum, which reports on competition matters, M&A and corporate investigations.

The article considers the implications of the ongoing war in Ukraine on the raft of EU antitrust probes in the energy sector.  Commenting on recent dawn raids by the European Commission, Professor Rab observes that “plainly the raids represent a ramping up of the commission’s antitrust scrutiny of EU energy markets.” She notes that “it would be naïve to suggest that the timing of this is unrelated to recent events in Ukraine and that Gazprom is only incidental to the intensification of regulatory focus.”  While recognising the significant practical challenges, she comments that “if supplies are, in fact, withheld in significant amounts, it may be asked whether the time has come to introduce interim measures.”
