We collect diversity data from members and staff as they join. Our data was last prepared for publication in June 2024 and can be accessed here: Diversity Data. Clearly, there has been movement since. Chambers is proud to say that in the last two years, we have attained our target of ensuring our staff cohort reflects the racial demographics of England and Wales (albeit not in the proportions of minority ethnicities), and we are close to gender parity. Elsewhere on these pages, you can read about the extensive efforts we are making within Chambers to improve the unrepresentative demographic at the commercial chancery Bar. We are just as committed to addressing inequalities within our wider communities. Through our outreach programme and involvement in the 10,000 Black Interns scheme, we support underrepresented groups access a career in law.
A number of our barristers volunteer with access-to-justice, providing pro bono legal advice and representation. Each year, Serle Court takes part in the London Legal Walk to support and raise funds for free legal advice charities.
Promoting gender equality at the Bar, we are proud signatories of the Women in Law pledge and the Chancery Bar Charter for Fairness. Women hold key positions of leadership within Chambers, including our Head of Chambers, Elizabeth Jones KC, and Chambers Director, Kathryn Purkis.
Our Head of People and EDI, Tanya Vyas, plays a central role in maintaining a thriving, supportive workplace. She oversees the experience of those applying for and undertaking pupillage with us, coordinates our outreach initiatives and guides the work of our well-established Equality, Diversity and Wellbeing Committee. The Committee’s work permeates all aspects of Chambers life.
