Instructing Us
All members of Chambers accept instructions from any of the following:
- Professional clients as defined in the Code of Conduct, i.e. Solicitors of England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland;
- Persons authorised by another regulator or licensing authority approved under the Legal Services Act 2007;
- Employed barristers or registered European lawyers;
- Practising barristers or registered European lawyers acting on their own behalf;
- Foreign lawyers;
- Legal Advice Centres and suchlike organisations designated by the Bar Council;
- Licensed access clients as defined in the Code of Conduct, ie persons or organisations approved under the Licensed Access Recognition Regulations, or listed in Schedules 1 and 2 thereto.
Some Members of Chambers also accept instructions via the Public Access Scheme.
The barrister members of chambers are barristers trading as sole practitioners and registered with the Bar Standards Board of England and Wales. They are governed by the Code of Conduct which can be viewed by clicking here. The Bar Standards Board’s Barrister Register page can be viewed here.
In the absence of express agreement to the contrary, in the barristers offer their services on the basis of The Standard Contractual Terms For The Supply Of Legal Services By Barristers To Authorised Persons 2020 (as referred to in Rule rC30.9c of the BSB Handbook). To access the Bar Council’s Standard Contractual Terms Guide, please click here. However, members will consider other bases for acting, including Combar Terms. Terms will be agreed at the outset of the instruction.
The type of fee arrangement will be determined on a case by case basis. Our members generally charge an hourly rate, with brief fees and refreshers. In some cases, a fixed fee can be agreed. We also consider Conditional Fee Agreements and partial Conditional Fee Agreements. The clerks are always happy to discuss fees and where requested will provide estimates. Other matters, such as the timeframe for the undertaking of the work, and any use of AI will be discussed at take-on or at the outset of the work, and as the matter progresses.
The barristers have professional liability insurance provided by the Bar Mutual Indemnity Fund Limited. The minimum cover which barristers must have is £500,000. Territorial coverage is world-wide, subject to the terms of cover of the Bar Mutual, which may be accessed by clicking here.
