Claudia Barry has a broad commercial and chancery practice, with a particular focus on civil fraud and commercial disputes.

She joined Chambers in October 2024, following the successful completion of her pupillage. During which she assisted with cases before the High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court across a wide variety of Chambers’ core practice areas.

Before coming to the Bar, Claudia practiced as a solicitor at Allen & Overy LLP (now A&O Shearman) in the litigation, arbitration and investigations team in Dubai. She trained with the firm in London (including a secondment to the Dubai office), completing seats in global banking and real estate finance; litigation and investigations; corporate pensions; and mergers and acquisitions. As a solicitor, Claudia worked on complex cross-border commercial and banking litigation before courts in England and Dubai, international arbitrations, and investigations involving sovereign wealth funds.

Claudia has a broad experience of commercial litigation in England and Dubai. She has worked on a variety of cases before the High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court on matters including disputed financial investments, civil fraud, and negligence.

Recent Cases

  • Claudia has a particular interest and broad experience in civil fraud, especially with an international dimension.
  • Various Claimants v Equiti Capital UK Limited – Claudia (led by Simon Hattan and Oliver Jones) acts for 45+ claimants in proceedings in the Chancery Division claiming compensation of over $40 million from the defendant for its dishonest assistance and knowing receipt in a fraudulent foreign exchange based investment scheme.
  • She is currently working on a high value s.423 Insolvency Act claim in the Chancery Division with Adil Mohamedbhai and has obtained interim relief including numerous freezing injunctions.
  • Glenea Contracts v Friel [2024] EWHC 1243 (Ch) – During pupillage she successfully assisted Max Marenbon in an employee fraud trial.

Claudia often represents banks, especially in obtaining interim relief such as freezing and proprietary injunctions. Some of this work includes property law elements. She has broad experience of this area from her work as a solicitor at Allen & Overy, both on the transactional and litigious side.

Much of Claudia’s work involves conflict of law issues, including the recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments in the English courts and disputes over applicable law.

  • Munícipio de Mariana & Others v BHP Group (the Fundão Dam disaster litigation) – During pupillage, Claudia assisted Jonathan McDonagh with various matters, including conflicts issues.

Claudia has assisted on a range of international trusts and probate disputes before a range of foreign courts including Jersey, the Cayman Islands and Saint Kitts and Nevis.

  • Abacus Land 4 Limited v Bradley & Rhodes – Claudia (led by Michael Walsh) acts for the respondents in the Court of Appeal. The Court will consider the meaning of reasonableness in the context of the exercise of a contractual discretion in service charge clauses under a lease. The Court will be asked to resolve the conflict between authorities of the Upper Tribunal and determine whether the test is objective reasonableness or mere rationality in the Braganza sense.
  • Claudia (led by Michael Walsh) acts for the defendant in relation to the allegedly fraudulently misrepresented financing of various property developments.

Before coming to the Bar, Claudia was a disputes solicitor with Allen & Overy in Dubai. During pupillage, Claudia assisted Rupert Reed KC with an ongoing shareholder dispute in Dubai.
