Richard Hine

Richard Hine has a broad commercial chancery practice, with a particular interest in contentious trusts, commercial litigation, and civil fraud.

Before coming to the Bar, Richard worked at a Big Four accounting firm for over five years. He is a Chartered Accountant (ACA – ICAEW) and a Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA – CIOT), and is comfortable handling matters involving complex financial elements. His additional qualifications and background present him with a distinct advantage for clients.

Richard joined Chambers in October 2024, after successfully completing pupillage. Prior to pupillage, Richard spent a year working as a Judicial Assistant in the Court of Appeal, and a year working as a Research Assistant at the Law Commission of England and Wales.

Much of Richard’s work involves legally and factually complex, high-value trust litigation in a variety of jurisdictions, including Jersey, Guernsey, Bermuda and The Bahamas.

Recent Cases

  • Wong v Grand View Private Trust Co & Ors (ongoing) – Acting (with Elspeth Talbot Rice KC, Dakis Hagen KC, Emma Hargreaves, and Stephanie Thompson)  for the Plaintiff in Bermudian proceedings concerning the validity of very substantial purpose trusts and equitable assignments of BVI shares. Following numerous interlocutory judgments, the trial and costs judgments ([2022] SC (Bda) 44 Com & [2022] SC (Bda) 60 Com) are currently on appeal to the Bermuda Court of Appeal.
  • Acting for a professional trustee in relation to an intimated claim by a beneficiary for alleged breaches of duty.
  • Acting for a professional trustee in relation to hostile litigation between different groups of beneficiaries of a trust.
  • Acting for a group of beneficiaries in relation to hostile litigation brought against them and the trustee by another group of beneficiaries of a trust.

Recent Cases

  • The Motoring Organisation v Spectrum Insurance Services [2024] EWHC 261 (Comm) – As a pupil, assisted Matthew Morrison KC, acting on behalf of the successful claimants, with the High Court liability trial of a claim for breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, and breach of confidence in relation to the alleged misappropriation of a business opportunity. Following qualification, Richard continued to act, led by Matthew Morrison KC, in respect of the remedy and quantum phase.
  • Instituto de Salud Para El Bienestar v Viva Enterprises Ltd & Anor – Acted (with Zoe O’Sullivan KC and Andrew Gurr) for a procurement body within the Mexican public health system in a US$41 million fraud claim arising out of a contract for the supply of ventilators during the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • Acting in relation to an international commercial dispute between co-investors in a group of companies, involving proceedings in a variety of fora, both in England and Wales and overseas.
  • Successfully opposing, unled, a claim for breach of contract relating to the supply of goods, involving allegations that they were not reasonably fit for purpose.

Much of Richard’s work involves offshore and international matters.

  • As a pupil, Richard assisted Jennifer Meech with an application in the High Court for a freezing injunction in relation to a claim against the former directors of a company arising from the alleged misappropriation of the company’s money and property.

  • As a pupil, Richard assisted Matthew Morrison KC with various applications in the Insolvency and Companies Court.
  • Following qualification, Richard has appeared unled in the Insolvency and Companies Court.

  • As a pupil, Richard assisted Michael Walsh KC with a defence and counterclaim in relation to a dispute between the former partners of a professional partnership.
