Ryan is developing a broad commercial practice, with a particular emphasis on civil fraud litigation. He has particular experience of advising on asset recovery and is regularly instructed by liquidators and litigation financing companies to recover company assets for the benefit of creditors.

Recent Cases

• Municipio de Mariana & Others v BHP Group Plc & BHP Group Ltd (2026) – Following the claimants’ success in a Phase 1 trial on liability issues, Ryan continues to act for c. 700,000 Brazilian claimants (including municipalities, individuals, businesses, religious institutions, indigenous peoples and utilities) in Phase 2 of the largest group action litigation in English legal history following the collapse of the Fundão dam in 2015 (instructed by Pogust Goodhead).
• Gilbert v Broadoak Private Finance Ltd [2026] EWHC 153 (KB); [2024] EWHC 2046 (Comm) – In a recent judgment, David Quest KC (sitting as a Deputy High Court Judge) provided an important analysis of the Court’s jurisdiction to grant a worldwide freezing injunction under the Chabra jurisdiction against respondents outside of the jurisdiction. In earlier stages of these proceedings, Ryan acted for the successful claimants on a c. £4 million debt claim and obtained worldwide freezing orders against the defendant company and its controlling director. As sole counsel, he successfully obtained a non-party costs order against the defendant company’s human alter ego. Led by Max Marenbon and instructed by Keidan Harrison.
• Del Bosque Limited v Shafie & Others (2026) – Ryan acts as sole counsel for the Second to Fourth Defendants in High Court proceedings involving breach of fiduciary duties and unlawful means conspiracy. The case is listed for trial in the High Court in Birmingham in 2026.
• Re PTS International Solutions Ltd (2025) – Ryan acts as sole counsel for the claimant in a claim under the Insolvency Act 1986 against the directors of an insolvent company for unauthorised payments out of the company. The case is listed for trial in the High Court in 2026.
• Commission Recovery Limited v Marks & Clerk LLP – Acted for the Defendants (led by John Machell KC) in a group litigation claim against a firm of intellectual property attorneys in a claim involving breach of fiduciary duty and secret commissions (instructed by Clifford Chance and Cooke, Young & Keidan).
• Khan v Mahal & Others – Ryan was instructed as sole counsel, acting for the First Defendant, in an unfair prejudice petition with a stated value of over £1 million in the High Court, and successfully varied a freezing injunction obtained against his client prior to his instruction (instructed by Keidan Harrison).
