Retirement farewell after 49 years to clerking legend Paul Ballard

After 49 years as a barristers’ clerk, today on his last day in chambers, we wish Paul Ballard farewell, and a very happy retirement.

On 5th August 1974, at the age of only 16, Paul began his career as Junior Clerk in the Commercial Chambers of (Sir) Roger Parker QC, 1 Hare Court.  Paul qualified as member of the Institute of Barristers' Clerks in 1976, and was promoted to Joint Senior clerk in the Spring of 1990. Paul held this position on the merger with 13 Old Square, becoming Serle Court in the year 2000.

Paul is responsible for inspiring the clerking generation of today, mentoring those he worked closely with, and will be sorely missed.  Paul’s friends and colleagues have commented fondly on his contributions to chambers and the profession, You will be much missed around Lincolns Inn and The Temple.”  “A credit to the profession and a thoroughly decent person.” “Always a pleasure to work with.”

Andrew Moran KC commented, "Paul has been a clerk and also a friend and confidante for well over 30 years spanning some enormous changes in working practices including the merger of Paul and my original set of Chambers, that of Lord Neill of Bladen Q.C., with the Chambers of Charles Sparrow Q.C.. Unquestionably, Paul’s gifts as a clerk and qualities as a person were very important to the success of Serle Court. Paul will be sorely missed by the members of Serle Court and their clients."

Our members, practice management team, and staff all wish Paul a very happy and healthy retirement and take this opportunity to thank him for all that he has contributed to chambers over the years.
