Andrew Francis writes for New Law Journal: ‘100 not out’
In an article for New Law Journal, Andrew Francis looks back at six pieces of 1925 property legislation, brought into effect by vigorous effort & with a legacy that remains largely intact.
On 9 April 1925, six important pieces of legislation were given the royal assent. The titles of at least five of them will be familiar to all lawyers practising in England and Wales and Northern Ireland, if not elsewhere. This legislation comprised (in the order in which they received His Majesty’s assent) the Settled Land Act 1925, the Trustee Act 1925, the Law of Property Act 1925, the Land Registration Act 1925, the Land Charges Act 1925, the Administration of Estates Act 1925 and the Universities and Colleges Estates Act 1925. All came into force on 1 January 1926. In this article, they are referred to together as ‘the 1925 legislation’. In this piece, Andrew celebrates and examines six pieces of legislation that received royal assent 100 years ago and still form the bedrock of much property law in 2025.
