PODCAST: “State aid in challenging times: “What is next for subsidy regulation in the UK after Coronavirus and Brexit?”

With the global coronavirus pandemic increasingly taking its human and economic toll, states are adopting strenuous financial support and stimulus measures in ways not seen since the 2008 financial crisis.

No longer business as usual, now more than ever the EU State aid regime has had to react with agility to ensure that economic assistance is provided in a coordinated and targeted way. The European Commission approved the first measure in 24 hours and more notifications are in the pipeline.  It has also adopted a Temporary Framework for State Aid measures to support the economy in the current COVID-19 outbreak.

For the UK, there is also prevailing uncertainty as to the shape and form of the UK’s future subsidy control regime following Brexit and due to take effect at the end of 2020.  Questions remain over the role of the level playing field in future trade negotiations and calls from the EU that competition and State aid rules will need to follow the EU approach.

In this podcast, Professor Suzanne Rab discusses the implications for the EU State aid regime as COVID-19 calls for urgent responses by States and regulators.  She also considers the potential future scenarios for State aid control in the aftermath of Brexit. Please click here to listen.

This podcast will be of particular interest for sensitive and exposed sectors seeking state support in these uncertain and challenging economic times including travel, hospitality, and retail.
