Shaun Matos is building a broad commercial and chancery practice across Chambers’ core specialisms. He has assisted in a wide range of matters including commercial litigation, civil fraud, banking and finance, arbitration and international / offshore work.

Shaun joined Chambers in March 2026, after completing a period as a probationary tenant under the supervision of Gareth Tilley and Jonathan McDonagh.

Before coming to the Bar, Shaun obtained a PhD in Law and LLM at University College London, and a BA in Law from King’s College, University of Cambridge. Alongside his PhD studies, Shaun worked as a research assistant to Professor Philippe Sands KC, including on several investor-State disputes, CAS disputes and cases before the International Court of Justice. Shaun has also assisted Professor Paul Davies with various commercial law research projects (including updating Snell’s Equity).

Shaun has taught various modules at both undergraduate and graduate level at UCL, including contract law, trusts law conflict of laws and international investment law. He has published several journal articles on a range of commercial and international law topics and his work has been cited by the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council and the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal. Before starting his PhD studies, Shaun worked as an intern in the dispute resolution teams of Fietta LLP in London and Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer in Hong Kong.

Recent Cases

Municipio de Mariana v BHP Group (quantum) – Currently instructed by the Claimants in the largest group litigation ever brought before the English courts. The claim arises from the collapse of the Fundão Dam in Brazil, thought to be one of the largest environmental disasters in Brazil.
Drafted particulars of claim for a breach of contract and unjust enrichment claim (as a pupil).
Assisted with various aspects of the NoX Emissions litigation (as a pupil).

Arbitrators

Shaun has extensive experience working on both commercial and investor-State arbitrations. Before coming to the Bar Shaun completed a PhD on the topic of investor-State arbitration. He also worked as a research assistant to Professor Philippe Sands KC and has worked on arbitrations at Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer in Hong Kong. He has worked on over a dozen investor-State disputes in additional to several commercial arbitrations.

Theodoros Adamakopoulos & Others v Cyprus, ICSID Case No. ARB/15/49 (at Fietta LLP) – Assisted with the representation of a group of claimants in a claim concerning bail-in measures introduced following a financial crisis.
Axiata & Ncell v Nepal, ICSID Case No. ARB/19/15 (at Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer) – Assisted with the representation of the claimants in a claim concerning a telecommunications project.
Amulsar Investor Ventures LLC v Republic of Armenia, PCA Case No. 2023-66 (as a pupil) – Assisted with the representation of the claimants in a claim concerning a mining project.
A multi-billion dollar construction under the auspices of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (at Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer).
A dispute concerning the validity and exercise of a put option in a share sale agreement under the auspices of the International Chamber of Commerce (as a pupil).
An ad hoc arbitration concerning a debt to equity conversion (as a pupil).

International

Many of the arbitration matters Shaun has been involved in concerned questions of public international law.

Obligations of States in Respect of Climate Change – Assisted with representing Mauritius before the International Court of Justice (assisting Professor Philippe Sands KC).
Climate Change Advisory Opinion – Assisted with representing Mauritius before the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (assisting Professor Philippe Sands KC).
Assisted with advising a sub-national government on issues of self-determination.
Assisted with advising an Asian State on legal issues relating to maritime boundary negotiations (at Fietta LLP).
Working as a research assistant to Professor Martins Paparinskis at the International Law Commission in 2024.
