Sport

Our barristers’ experience and expertise in the laws, rules and regulations governing sport attract some of the sector’s most sensitive and challenging instructions – concerning its top athletes – to Serle Court.

In the sports arena, members of chambers frequently advise on and act in disputes before domestic or international tribunals, including the Court of Arbitration for Sport, or before the High Court in a full range of sports disputes covering a large spectrum of sports including (purely as examples) football, rugby union, cricket, horse racing, swimming, athletics, motor racing, sailing, diving and rugby league.

Our clients include competitors in all sports, domestic and international governing bodies, stakeholders and commercial partners.

We also frequently advise on non-contentious matters in a sporting context, such as the drafting of rules and regulations and their implementation and adoption.

Particular specialisms within Chambers include on all issues relating to selection and Paralympic classification where members have appeared before the Board of Appeal of Classification.

A number of members also sit as arbitrators for various domestic and international tribunals, including for Sport Resolutions.  Others have been appointed as investigators in disciplinary matters.

Christopher Stoner KC is joint author of the chapter on Selection Disputes in Lewis & Taylor – Sport: Law & Practice (3rd & 4th Editions) and is a Judge of the FIA Cost Cap Adjudication Panel.

Our mediators also have experience of mediating Sports matters, including Paul Johnson who has mediated matters in cricket (commercial disputes involving county cricket), football (commercial), rugby (competition) and triathlon (national association/club/coach).
